Lawrence M. Ausubel is Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland, Vice President and Treasurer of Market Design Inc., and Co-President of Spectrum Exchange. Professor Ausubel has written widely on auctions, bargaining, industrial organization and financial markets. His recent research has focused on the design of new and efficient ascending-bid auctions (An Efficient Ascending-Bid Auction for Multiple Objects, 1997, and An Efficient Dynamic Auction for Heterogeneous Commodities, 2000) and on adverse selection in the credit card market.

In the current wave of European 3G spectrum auctions, Dr. Ausubel served as bidding advisor to Telefónica, the Spanish telecommunications giant, in some $10 billion of spectrum license purchases. He has previously provided expert auction consulting to MCI, US AirWaves, MobileMedia, and the Canadian government in various spectrum auctions, as well as to NECX and other firms in e-commerce.

Dr. Ausubel holds three U.S. patents related to the computer implementation of auctions. He has also testified before the U.S. Congress and the National Bankruptcy Review Commission as an expert on bankruptcy issues, and in court as an economics expert.

Before joining the University of Maryland faculty, Dr. Ausubel taught at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Dr. Ausubel earned his A.B. in Mathematics at Princeton University, his M.S. in Mathematics at Stanford University, his M.L.S. in Legal Studies at Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Economics at Stanford University.
